Join RISE Processum and help shape the future of strain development. As an Automation Specialist, you will support cutting-edge biotechnology research by building and maintaining high-throughput laboratory workflows in close collaboration with scientists and engineers.
About us RISE is Sweden’s research institute and innovation partner. Through collaboration with industry, academia, and the public sector, we contribute to a competitive and sustainable society.
RISE Processum is part of RISE and is a key player in the development of biobased processes and products. At our research facility in Örnsköldsvik, we work closely with industry partners and research organizations within one of Sweden’s strongest biotechnology and biorefinery clusters.
Our Biotechnology group manages a growing portfolio of projects focusing on bioprocesses, chemical and biotechnological analysis, method development, and sustainable materials. We are now building a new Strain Development team and are looking for an Automation Specialist who wants to join us on this exciting journey.
The role As an automation specialist at RISE within our new strain development team, you will mainly work on R&D projects and contract research targeting applications such as biochemicals, biofuels, biomaterials, proteins & enzymes, and food & feed. You will play a central role in ensuring reliable and scalable, high-throughput workflows, collaborating closely with other scientists and engineers in the team.
Your responsibilities will include:
• Operate and maintain our automation equipment for high-throughput screening, including liquid handling, colony picking and arraying, imaging, analytics, and robotic integration.
• Develop and maintain scripts and methods for instrument control, data capture, and workflow automation, both independently and in close collaboration with other team members.
• Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues and handle routine maintenance and updates, to improve equipment availability and ensure timely data delivery.
• Maintain and extend our Docker-based solutions for remote processing and transfer of data.
• Onboard new team members by introducing them to the equipment, scripts, and automated workflows.
• Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying bottlenecks, optimizing protocols, and helping shape new projects, including grant applications.
Location: On site in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden.
Who are you? We are looking for a person who can bridge laboratory automation and strain development workflows.
Requirements:
• BSc or MSc in engineering, biotechnology, automation or a related field.
• Hands-on experience operating and maintaining laboratory automation systems.
• Proficiency in programming automation equipment using standard vendor software (e.g., method and script development for liquid handlers and integrated platforms).
• Demonstrated ability to integrate automation hardware and software into standardized, reliable workflows in a laboratory environment.
• Independent troubleshooting and sound technical judgment to diagnose and resolve issues across hardware and software.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in different research teams.
• Working proficiency in English, both spoken and written.
Meritorious:
• Experience in a biotech, pharma, or academic R&D environment, ideally involving microbial strain development.
• Familiarity with common automation and scheduling platforms, such as Tecan FluentControl and Thermo Scientific Momentum.
• Python programming skills, along with familiarity with Docker, Linux, version control (Git), and basic data pipelines.
• Knowledge of LIMS/ELN systems and laboratory data management practices.
• Experience with AI/ML methods for workflow optimization, image analysis, or data quality assurance.
• Experience specifying, procuring, and commissioning laboratory equipment.
• Swedish language skills
As a person, you are a collaborative problem solver who enjoys working closely with colleagues and external partners. You are curious and motivated by finding innovative solutions to complex challenges. You have strong communication skills, and the ability to drive your work independently while contributing to the success of the team. You are also eager to share knowledge and help build a strong and supportive team. You have an interest in sustainability and the circular bioeconomy, and how R&D translates into applications in bio-based chemicals, materials, or food.
Our offer We offer a workplace with strong development potential and a growing portfolio of research projects. With us, you will have a varied and stimulating role, working closely with advanced instrumentation and dedicated colleagues.
